How I Discovered my Passion for Nails

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

Hi, my name is Hannah! On Instagram, I’m known as @clawsbyhannah. Here is my story!

I have been submerged in the #cosmetology world for my entire life. My mother has owned a salon since before I was born, so some would say it’s in my blood. I grew up helping her and spending a ton of time hanging out in her salon. As soon as I was old enough, I would help her shampoo and paint her clients #nails while their hair processed. My interest in nails grew more and more every day, and by the age of 10, I started painting nails at Church events for pastors wives. I developed a passion for collecting different colors and varieties of polishes, and of course always had to have the newest shades.

As I got older and began to think about what I wanted to do as a career, I went to Vocational Technical school my freshman year of high school… Except it wasn’t for nails, it was for Auto Tech! I found myself wanting to try something new because I had been around cosmetology my whole life, and my sister also went to school for it. I really just wanted to find my own way. I ended up dropping out of auto tech after a few weeks because it was not something I saw fitting into my future. Going back to what I knew, I made the choice to enroll into cosmetology. They taught mostly hair, but I still gravitated towards nails. I graduated my senior year with my full cosmetology license and started at a local salon doing hair.

I struggled to find passion in doing hair, despite the encouragement of my Mom to keep going. After a year or so my mom decided to open a larger salon and asked me to join her there. I tried hair again for a little while, but found myself getting drawn back into my passion of nails. it was at this time that I made the difficult to decision to quit doing hair and switch to nails full time. As a newly married woman, this was difficult because everyone told me you can’t make much money doing nails.

Next thing you know, my books began growing with nail appointments. We quickly outgrew our #salon space and opened a much larger location. By this time I decided that I didn’t want to do “just nails” I wanted to do fun and crazy nails! Nails that would be out of the box for our area. I craved something different that I couldn’t find anywhere local. I started to train myself by watching hours of YouTube tutorials, and practicing on my own nails. After a year of hard work, patience, and TON of practice, I had a full book. Now, I’m dedicated to helping others discover their #passion for nails, and I’m here to show anyone that you can do whatever you put your mind to.
